In-office same-day crown milling machine with digital design on screen

Same-day crowns use computer-aided design and in-office milling (CAD/CAM) to restore a damaged tooth in a single appointment. We digitally scan your prepared tooth with the iTero scanner, design the crown on screen, and mill it from a solid block of high-strength ceramic while you wait — no messy impression trays, no temporary crown, and no return visit weeks later.

Modern milling ceramics like lithium disilicate (e.max) and zirconia-reinforced materials offer an excellent balance of strength, wear resistance, and natural aesthetics. The digital workflow gives us precise control over the crown’s shape, margins, contacts, and bite, resulting in restorations that fit accurately and look like natural teeth from the very first try-in.

How same-day crowns work: After the tooth is prepared (shaped to receive a crown), we capture a detailed 3D scan using the iTero scanner. The scan is imported into our CAD software, where we digitally sculpt the crown’s anatomy — cusps, grooves, contacts with neighboring teeth, and bite relationship — all on screen. You can watch the design take shape in real time. Once we’re satisfied with the design and shade match, the file is sent to our in-office mill, which carves the crown from a ceramic block in about 15–20 minutes. We then try it in, check margins and bite, apply custom staining and glazing for a natural appearance, and bond it permanently — all in the same appointment.

When same-day crowns are a great option: teeth weakened by large fillings or fractures, cracked or chipped teeth that need full coverage, teeth restored after root canal treatment, cosmetic improvements to misshapen or severely discolored teeth, and replacing old crowns that have failed or no longer fit. Some complex cases — multi-unit bridges, highly esthetic anterior cases, or full-mouth reconstructions — may still benefit from lab fabrication where a ceramist hand-layers porcelain, and we’ll recommend the best approach for your specific situation.

Why Patients Choose This

One-Visit Convenience

Walk in with a damaged tooth and leave with a permanent, custom-fit crown — all in a single appointment. No temporary crown to manage and no second visit to schedule weeks later.

Precision Digital Fit

Every crown is designed from your exact 3D scan, ensuring accurate margins, tight contacts, and a comfortable bite from the start. Digital design reduces the adjustments and remakes common with traditional impression techniques.

Natural Aesthetics

We mill from high-quality ceramic blocks that mimic the translucency, shade, and surface texture of natural enamel. Custom staining and glazing let us match surrounding teeth so the crown blends seamlessly into your smile.

What to Expect

Step 1

We numb the area and conservatively prepare your tooth, removing damaged structure while preserving as much healthy enamel as possible. Then we capture a detailed iTero 3D scan — no goopy impressions needed.

Step 2

Using CAD software, we design your crown digitally — sculpting anatomy, adjusting contacts, and selecting the ideal shade. You can watch the process on screen and see the design before it’s milled.

Step 3

The design file is sent to our in-office mill, which carves the crown from a solid ceramic block in about 15–20 minutes. During this time, you can relax in the chair or step out briefly.

Step 4

We try in the crown, verify the fit, margins, and bite, then apply custom staining and glazing for a natural look. Once everything checks out, we bond it permanently, polish, and you’re done.

FAQs

Are same-day crowns as strong as lab-made crowns?

Yes — modern milling ceramics like lithium disilicate (e.max) are clinically proven to be durable and long-lasting for most applications. Some complex cosmetic or multi-unit bridge cases may still benefit from lab fabrication, and we’ll recommend the best option for your situation.

Will I need a temporary crown?

In most cases, no. Because the crown is designed and milled the same day, you leave with your permanent restoration. This eliminates the temporary crown phase — along with the sensitivity, looseness, and diet restrictions that often come with it.

How long does the appointment take?

Typically 90 minutes to 2 hours from start to finish, depending on complexity. That includes preparation, scanning, designing, milling (about 15–20 minutes), and bonding. One visit instead of two or three.

How long will a same-day crown last?

With good oral hygiene, regular dental visits, and mindful habits (avoiding ice-chewing, nail-biting, etc.), a well-made ceramic crown can last 10–15 years or longer. Longevity depends on bite forces, grinding habits, and overall care.

Will the crown match my other teeth?

Yes. We shade-match to your surrounding teeth using both visual and digital shade guides. Custom staining and glazing after milling let us add character — translucency, subtle color gradients, surface texture — so the crown looks natural, not monochromatic.

Is the procedure painful?

No. The tooth is numbed with local anesthesia before any preparation begins. Most patients report that the experience is more comfortable than a traditional crown process because there’s no impression tray and no temporary to manage.

Is a same-day crown covered by insurance?

Most dental insurance plans that cover crowns will cover a same-day crown at the same benefit level as a lab-fabricated one. We verify your benefits upfront and provide a clear estimate before starting treatment.

Can any tooth get a same-day crown?

Most teeth that need a single crown are good candidates. However, front teeth with complex cosmetic demands, teeth requiring a post-and-core, or multi-unit bridges may be better served by lab fabrication. We’ll evaluate your case and recommend the best approach.
