Professional dental photography studio for clinical documentation

Our dedicated on-site dental photography studio is equipped with professional-grade cameras, macro lenses, ring flashes, and standardized backgrounds to capture consistent, high-quality images of your teeth, smile, and facial features. These aren't casual snapshots — they're calibrated clinical photographs that serve as essential diagnostic tools, treatment planning references, and communication aids for lab work and specialist collaboration.

Standardized dental photography is a hallmark of modern, detail-oriented dentistry. By capturing the same views under the same lighting conditions at every visit, we can track changes with precision, design cosmetic treatments with accuracy, and document results objectively. Whether we're planning a single veneer or a full smile makeover, studio-quality photographs are the foundation of predictable, beautiful outcomes.

How we use dental photography: Our photo protocol follows established standards for dental documentation: full-face portraits (smiling and at rest), retracted views of the upper and lower arches, lateral (side) views of the bite, and close-up detail shots of specific teeth or areas of concern. Each photo is taken with calibrated exposure, white balance, and magnification to ensure accurate color representation — critical when matching shades for veneers, crowns, and composite bonding. Photos are stored in your digital chart for side-by-side comparison over time.

When dental photography is part of your care: comprehensive new-patient exams, smile design and cosmetic consultations (veneers, bonding, whitening), full-mouth reconstruction planning, orthodontic assessment and progress tracking, shade-matching communication with dental labs, before-and-after documentation of completed treatments, and insurance documentation when visual evidence supports a claim.

Why Patients Choose This

Accurate Shade & Color Matching

Professional lighting and calibrated white balance produce true-to-life color in every image. This gives our dental lab the precise shade information they need to fabricate restorations that blend seamlessly with your natural teeth.

Precision Treatment Planning

Standardized photos let us analyze smile line, tooth proportions, gum symmetry, and facial aesthetics with a level of detail that a mirror exam alone cannot provide. This is especially valuable for cosmetic cases where millimeters matter.

Reliable Before & After Documentation

Consistent angles, lighting, and backgrounds mean your before and after images are truly comparable — no tricks of light or angle. This helps both you and our team evaluate results objectively and plan any refinements.

What to Expect

Step 1

We seat you in our photo studio area and position cheek retractors and mirrors as needed. Each view is taken with the same camera settings for consistency.

Step 2

A series of standardized images is captured: full-face smile, retracted front view, lateral views, occlusal (biting surface) shots, and any detail views needed for your case.

Step 3

Images are reviewed on screen, calibrated for color accuracy, and saved to your digital chart. Shade-matching photos are sent directly to the dental lab when restorations are involved.

Step 4

At follow-up visits, we re-photograph the same views for side-by-side comparison, allowing us to track healing, monitor changes, and document your completed results.

FAQs

Will my photos be shared publicly?

Never without your explicit written consent. Your dental photographs are part of your private medical record and are protected by HIPAA. We only use photos publicly (such as on our website or social media) if you sign a specific release.

How long does the photo session take?

A full set of standardized dental photos typically takes 10–15 minutes. For complex cosmetic cases, we may spend a bit longer capturing additional views and detail shots.

Why can't you just use a phone camera?

Consumer phone cameras lack the magnification, ring-flash lighting, and color calibration needed for accurate dental documentation. Our professional setup ensures consistent, reproducible results that we can reliably compare over months and years, and that dental labs can trust for shade matching.

Do I need dental photos if I'm just getting a cleaning?

We may capture a few quick photos during your exam to document any findings, but a full studio session is typically reserved for comprehensive exams, cosmetic consultations, and treatment-planning appointments.

Are the retractors uncomfortable?

Cheek retractors may feel slightly awkward, but they don't hurt. They're held in place briefly — just long enough to capture the image — and we'll make sure you're comfortable throughout.

Can I see my photos?

Absolutely — we display them on the monitor during your appointment and walk you through what each image shows. Seeing your own teeth up close is often one of the most eye-opening parts of a consultation.

Can I get copies for my records?

Yes. We can provide digital copies of your images for personal records or to share with another dental provider if you're seeking a second opinion or transferring care.

How do photos help with lab work?

When we send a crown, veneer, or bridge case to the lab, photos provide the ceramist with crucial information about your tooth shade, surface texture, translucency patterns, and gum line that a scan or shade tab alone can't capture. This results in restorations that look more natural and lifelike.
